TOWN OF RIB MOUNTAIN — One person died after a vehicle veered off the road and plunged into a storm retention pond, according to officials from the South Area Fire District.
The single-vehicle crash was reported at about 7:15 p.m. Sunday near Lilac Avenue and Phlox Lane in the town of Rib Mountain.
Two bystanders witnessed the crash and immediately entered the water in an attempt to rescue the driver and lone occupant of the vehicle. Attempts to revive the victim by bystanders and SAFER paramedics were not successful and the driver died of his injuries, police said.
Additional details are expected to be released later today. The Marathon County Sheriff’s Department and Marathon County Medical Examiner are investigating the crash.
“Our thoughts are with the family this evening during this tragic time,” SAFER officials wrote on their Facebook page.
