WAUSAU — Members of the city’s finance committee on Tuesday approved a proposal to borrow $4.6 million to fund infrastructure improvements for the city’s business campus, located on Wausau’s far west side.

The improvements will pave the way for relocating both Wausau Chemical and Great Lakes Cheese from the city’s riverfront to new spaces within the business campus. The improvements will be financed through Tax Increment District 11, according to city documents.

At Tuesday’s meeting, City Council President Lisa Rasmussen said the money will be used to create infrastructure that will attract more businesses to the business campus. Rasmussen is also chair of the finance committee. The design for the development area is nearly complete, Rasmussen said.

Rasmussen, along with Karen Kellbach, David Nutting and Joe Gehin voted to approve the funding. Dennis Smith was the lone holdout who voted against the plan, which is subject to full council approval.

The matter is expected to appear on the council’s July 18 agenda.
