WAUSAU — Wausau’s new hockey team is asking the community to help name their new mascot, according to a news release issued this week.
Submit mascot names now through Sept. 22 at riverwolveshockey.com. Fans who submit a name will become eligible to win a RiverWolves prize pack. The team will unveil their mascot and name at a later date.
The city’s first hockey team in more than a decade will open their season Oct. 13 at Marathon Park Arena. The RiverWolves are part of the North American 3 Hockey League (NA3HL) and are being relocated from Romeoville, Ill. this season and will assume the playing rights to those players that were rostered with the Chicago Jr. Bulldogs during the 2016-17 season, according to the NA3HL.
The REB Enterprise, LLC, ownership group consists of Steve Black and Duncan Woodhull. Black, along with son Bryant Black, also owns the NA3HL’s New Ulm Steel.
Wausau will be part of the NA3HL Central Division, joining the LaCrosse Freeze, the North Iowa Bulls, the Rochester Ice Hawks and the Wisconsin Whalers, a team based in Oregon Wis. The league has 48 teams in eight player divisions.
