Imagine you’ve just gone through breast cancer treatment.

You’ve endured biopsies, surgeries, radiation, chemotherapy. Your hair is gone, your breast is gone. You’ve gone through a marathon of treatments, a roller coaster of emotions, and now it’s over. You’ve survived. You can’t wait to get back to normal life.

But what does that mean?

Marshfield Clinic’s second annual breast cancer survivorship program will be offered to patients and the community on Saturday, Oct. 21, in Weston.

Unfortunately, the day of your last radiation or chemotherapy treatment does not mark the end of your journey with breast cancer. Instead, you’re about to embark on another leg of the trip. This one is all about adjusting to life as a breast cancer survivor. In many ways, it will be a lot like the life you had before, but in other ways, it will be very different. Call it your “new normal.”

Coping with the “new normal,” from dealing with lingering fatigue to changing nutritional needs and even changes in relationships, can be difficult to manage, said Amanda Boreen, Breast Care Coordinator with the Marshfield Clinic. The clinic will hold a day-long event on Saturday for breast cancer survivors to help them navigate the changes and challenges ahead.

“There are a lot of unknowns,” Boreen said. “Our event is all about building fellowship, helping survivors know where to go for support.”

The event, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Marshfield Clinic Weston Center, will feature presentations by experts on topics including nutrition, physical activity, community support, and others.

“We welcome all breast cancer survivors to attend and take advantage of this day for themselves and a guest to receive helpful information on healing with expert presenters and other survivors,” Boreen said.
