Members of the city’s public health and safety committee meeting on Monday unanimously approved a proposal to license pedal pubs in Wausau.

Pat Peckham, Karen Kellbach, Lisa Rasmussen and Becky McElhaney all voted in favor of an ordinance drafted by Assistant City Atty. Tara Alfonso to regulate the pedal-powered taverns on wheels. A fifth member of the committee, Romey Wagner, was absent and excused from Monday’s meeting, according to City Clerk Toni Rayala.

The proposed ordinance now moves to the full city council for approval.

City leaders first considered allowing pedal pubs in 2015 but ultimately opted not to move forward, amid concern from Wausau Police Chief Jeff Hardel and others, according to minutes from past meetings.

But the issue was renewed in September, when Dan Dadabo and Ashley Sampson approached the committee with a plan for a pedal pub business that would take up to 16 riders on pedal tours throughout the downtown Wausau area.
