WAUSAU — Members of the Rib Mountain Plan Commission on Wednesday approved a plan for a new building that would bring a Five Guys restaurant to the area.

The three-tenant building proposed for 1301 Starling Lane would also be home to Kay Jewelers and one other business. Kay Jewelers currently has a location in the Wausau Center mall. It is not yet clear if the mall location will remain open when the new building is complete.

The proposal calls for demolition of an existing building at the site to make way for new 6,300-square-foot retail structure, according to town documents.

REI Engineering proposed the project, which will be spearheaded by Herbeck Development of Appleton.

Five Guys, with headquarters in Virginia, operates more than 1,000 restaurants including locations in Appleton, Green Bay, Oshkosh and Eau Claire.

The project is slated for completion in 2018.
