A group of John Muir Middle School students will head to the state competition after putting their math skills to the test in regional action at the University Wisconsin Marathon County.
The goal of this competition is to challenge students to use higher-order thinking skills and problem-solving abilities in mathematics and to give recognition for academic effort and achievement.
MATHCOUNTS is a national enrichment club and competition program that promotes middle school mathematics achievement through grassroots involvement in every U.S. state and territory. Students will compete individually as well as in groups of four.
The John Muir team, consisting of Isabelle Sunby, Grace Albee, Jack Saari and Nicholas Knezic, took home first place earning them a spot at the team state competition.
Joining them as an individual participant will be Sophie Wokatsch, who earned a spot at the state competition based on her individual efforts. Overall, Isabelle Sunby earned first place at the regional competition, Sophie Wokatsch earned second place and Nicholas Knezic took home fourth.
The state competition will be held at Acuity Insurance in Sheboygan on March 3.
