GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) — A Green Bay woman and her boyfriend are facing charges in the death of a 15-month-old toddler who died last May.

Authorities charged 30-year-old Sarah Kairys and 31-year-old Juan Maravilla after the full autopsy report was released last week. The medical examiner found that the baby died of blunt force injuries to the head and torso. There were multiple injuries in stages of healing on the body, including bite marks and fractured ribs.

Kariys initially claimed she was watching movies on the couch with Maravilla on the night of the child’s death and saw the child crying on the floor at the bottom of the stairs, according to police reports.

But later, Kariys told detectives that she believed Maravilla did have something to do with the child’s death.

Detectives questioned Maravilla on June 1. He claimed that the fall down the stairs was an accident. When questioned about the additional bruises on the child, he said, “I smacked her up because I got mad, I just got mad and accidentally hit her,” according to police.

As questioning continued, he became upset and yelled out, “I didn’t mean for this s—, I didn’t want her [the baby] to go [die].”

Kairys is charged with child neglect resulting in death and failing to prevent harm to a child. Maravilla is accused of first-degree reckless homicide and child abuse causing death. Maravilla is currently in Green Bay Correctional Institution on a separate charge and was scheduled to be released on May 15.
