WAUSAU — Here’s your chance to have some fun and help ensure people in Marathon County have food to eat.

The sixth annual Community Fest will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sept. 22 at Marathon Park on Stewart Avenue in Wausau.

The event features a day full of fun activities for families and includes the United We Can food sculpture event, dozens of free children’s activities and a Big Trucks, Tractors and Trailers display. Children’s activities and United We Can will be held in the Expo Building. The Trucks, Trailers and Tractors display will be held just outside the Expo Building.

Attendees are encouraged to take non-perishable food items or dollars, which can be used to buy tickets to vote for their favorite United We Can food sculpture.

Food from all sculptures, as well as the food donations and dollars, will go to the Marathon County Hunger Coalition. Since 2010, this event has raised over 110,000 pounds of food and $14,000 in cash to support food pantries across Marathon County.

United We Can awards will be presented at about 1:45 p.m. on Saturday, as well as the People’s Choice Award. United We Can setup begins Thursday, Sept. 20, in the late afternoon. Sculptures will also be constructed from noon until 4 p.m. Friday.

Community members can vote for their favorite United We Can sculpture from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. by taking non-perishable food items or dollars to trade for voting tickets at the United Way booth at the Expo Building center rotunda.

New this year: Six companies will compete in an On the Spot Challenge. In this event, each company will receive an identical supply of canned and boxed food and will be challenged to build a sculpture with the items provided. They will not be given a list of supplies in advance and will need to use their creativity and ingenuity to build something On The Spot.

More information: Tractor and wagon rides around Marathon Park will be available. Costumed mascots will wander through the event. And food and beverages will be available for purchase.
