WAUSAU — A 56-year-old woman being held in a receiving cell at the Marathon County Jail was found dead Tuesday afternoon, according to the Marathon County Sheriff’s Department.

The inmate, whose name has not been released, had been booked into the jail shortly beforehand on a probation violation hold and suspicion of fifth offense OWI, police said.

Corrections officers conducting a routine cell check at about 3 p.m. found the woman unresponsive in a receiving cell. Officers conducted lifesaving measures until about 3:07 p.m., when emergency crews from the Wausau Fire Department responded to the jail, but efforts to revive the woman were not successful.

An autopsy to determine the woman’s cause of death is being conducted today, Oct. 3, police said.

An investigation into the circumstances surround the woman’s death is underway. No additional information was immediately released.
