The following major incidents were reported to the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Department for the week ending March 25, 2019:
A 29-year-old Tomahawk man was arrested Tuesday afternoon on a warrant charge. When contact was made the man provided a false name twice before running into his house. The man eventually surrendered and was brought to the Lincoln County Jail on the warrant, he was also charged with obstructing an officer.
A 17-year-old Merrill man was arrested Saturday evening on a charge of second degree sexual assault of a child.
More than 20 twenty people called in to report they would be burning brush this past week. Residents are reminded to call the Sheriff’s Department’s non emergency number when burning in a well-traveled area number prior to burning in a well-traveled area. As the snow melts, the risk of fires increase and a permit will be required once the ground is bare.
One caller reported that a scammer tried to convince him that he owed money to Wisconsin Public Service. Numerous law enforcement agencies have reported that they are receiving reports of similar scam attempts. The scammers normally know the name and address of and claim to have other information your account. They inform the target that they are either behind on their bill or they need to do upgrades to the service. In the end, the target is told unless they provided money to WPS their service would be disconnected. The scammers usually use a computer to spoof a caller ID and make it appear as if the call is coming from WPS. You are reminded that a public utility will never ask you to provide them with gift cards for payment.
