The Wisconsin Department of Transportation provides weekly road construction updates for counties in north central Wisconsin: Adams, Green Lake, Florence, Forest, Iron, Langlade, Lincoln, Marathon, Marquette, Menominee, Oneida, Portage, Price, Shawano, Vilas, Waupaca, Waushara, and Wood.

The following updates are for the week of June 3, 2019. Construction schedules are dependent on favorable weather conditions and construction progress.

Green Lake & Waushara Counties

Highway: WIS 49

Location: WIS 23 to South street (Green Lake to Berlin)

Schedule: May 13, 2019 to October 15, 2019

Traffic impacts: Traffic will continue to be reduced to a single lane in each direction with temporary traffic signals between County A and South Street for the next three to four weeks.  Traffic will be moved to the west side of the road beginning June 3 to finish the pipe, and the signals and wall will be moved to the next pipe to the north later in the week.  Contractors will also be working on the guardrail between Townline Road and County V using flagging.  Various shoulder closures throughout the project will also be closed for grading operations.

Anticipated work schedule for next week: Move lane closure for next pipe between County A and South Street and complete the middle pipe. After the second pipe is done, the closure will be set up for the northernmost pipe between County A and South Street. Guardrail installation between Townline and County V.

Green Lake County

Highway: WIS 91

Location: Berlin city limits to west Winnebago County line

Schedule: May 28, 2019 to mid-June 2019

Traffic impacts: Daily flagging operations for pavement marking, rumble strips, and shouldering work.

Anticipated work schedule for next week: Centerline rumble strip installation and shoulder work.


Iron County

Highway:  WIS 122 (Regionwide Bridge Maintenance Project)

Location: Montreal River, Iron County

Schedule: May 20, 2019 to June 14, 2019

Traffic impacts: WIS 122 bridge in Iron County will be down to one lane with flagging operations.

Anticipated work schedule for next week: Crews will install erosion control measures, clean out loose material at the base of the pier and pump in grout around the base of the pier.


Lincoln County

Highway:  WIS 64 (Bridge Maintenance)

Location: Bridge over the Prairie River, City of Merrill

Schedule: May 14, 2019 to early August, 2019

Traffic impacts: Eastbound/Westbound WIS 64 will be reduced to one, 11-foot lane in each direction.

Pedestrian detour: East side of bridge, north toward T. B. Scott library, across Prairie River to Stange Public Park, North to E. 3rd. Street.

Anticipated work schedule for next week: Excavation activities and work on the bridge wings will occur.


Marathon County

Highway:  County WW (Local Project)

Location: Wisconsin River Bridge, Brokaw (Village of Maine)

Schedule: April 22, 2019 to May 22, 2020

Traffic impacts: Traffic is currently maintained on a single lane, 10.5 feet in width, on the existing bridge with temporary traffic signals. Half of the bridge deck will be removed and constructed.

Anticipated work schedule for next week: Contractors will continue to prepare bridge for upcoming concrete pouring.


Marquette County

Highway: WIS 22

Location: Main & Montello Streets, 5th Street to N Junction WIS 23

Schedule: April 30, 2019 – July 2019

Traffic Impacts: Pier work begins on June 17, no traffic impacts until then.

Anticipated work schedule for next week: No work is scheduled for next week.

Highway:  WIS 23

Location: City of Montello

Schedule: April 15th, 2019 to November 15th, 2019

Traffic impacts: WIS 23 is closed from West Street to Lake Street. Maps of local detours are posted at the website below.

Anticipated work schedule for next week: Pour concrete barrier for outfall basin. Complete installation of storm sewer from West Street to Lake Street. Crews will begin roadway grading for aggregate base installation.

Oneida County

Highway:  US 51

Location: Between Minocqua Bridge to Lakeshore Drive in Downtown Minocqua

Schedule: May 6, 2019 to June 13, 2019

Traffic impacts: 

Motorists can expect to encounter one lane traffic on US 51 northbound and southbound between Minocqua Bridge and Lakeshore Drive. Parking will be limited to one side. Motorists may experience poor visibility at various times throughout the day. Expect travel delays. Pedestrians should anticipate sidewalk closures and alternate routes.

Anticipated work schedule for next week: Crews will begin removal and replacement of the designated curb & gutter and sidewalk areas along US 51 northbound. Pavement marking removal and replacement work in US 51 southbound will continue.


Oneida & Vilas Counties

Highway:  US 51

Location: 3rd Avenue to Tuckaway Drive

Schedule: Spring 2018 to November 2019

Traffic impacts: 

US 51 will be reduced to one lane of traffic in each direction between WIS 47 and Trapp Road. Traffic on US 51 will be restricted to a 12-foot maximum width. Motorists should expect to encounter occasional flagging operations. Motorists are encouraged to consider using WIS 47 as an alternate route to avoid delays at peak tourist travel times.

Anticipated work schedule for next week: Crews will place the new curb & gutter and start placing the new sidewalk.

Portage County

Highway: Business 51

Location: Mac Arthur Way – Minnesota Avenue

Schedule: March 18, 2019 to Spring 2020

Anticipated work schedule for next week: Crews will complete the new east bound pavement on County HH from Lower Whiting Park through the Locust Street intersection with County HH/McDill Avenue. Crews will begin placing concrete for the Willow and Cedar Street intersections on the east side of Business 51. Crews will continue grading for sidewalk along the new north bound lanes on the east side of Business 51. Crews will begin landscaping restoration from McArthur to 700 feet north of Porter on Business 51 northbound, and in the two infiltration ponds at Elm and Cedar Street.

Waupaca County

Highway: WIS 22 Bridges

Location: Wautoma – Clintonville, at bridges over:

(1) South Branch of the Little Wolf River

(2) Crystal River and

(3) Wisconsin Central Ltd. (CN) RR tracks

Schedule: May 14th, 2019 to August 2nd, 2019

Traffic impacts: Northbound lane closures on all three bridges.  WIS 22 will remain open to traffic in both directions. Traffic will be controlled with flaggers and temporary traffic signals.

Anticipated work schedule for next week: Crews will continue work to set forms, rebar, and the steel extrusions for the new expansion joints at both ends of bridge three (3).  Crews will complete concrete surface repairs at bridge one (1) and begin removing unsound concrete from the deck of bridge two (2).


Highway: WIS 156

Location: WIS 22 to Shawano County Line

Schedule: April 29, 2019 – September 2019

Traffic impacts: When construction begins on or about June 10, WIS 156 will remain open to a minimum of one lane. Temporary traffic signals will be used on the bridge over the Embarrass River and the bridge over the Wolf River.  All other work will be conducted under lane closures with flagging operations.

Anticipated work schedule for next week: None until construction begins on June 10.


Wood County

Highway:  WIS 97 (Central Avenue)

Location: Between Arnold street and Harrison street, city of Marshfield

Schedule: May 1, 2019 to August 29, 2019

Traffic impacts: Motorists can expect to encounter one-lane traffic in each direction on WIS 97 between Arnold street and Harrison street. Crews will be working on the inside travel lanes of WIS 97 between Arnold street and Harrison street. Pedestrian access to businesses and schools will be maintained during construction.

Anticipated work schedule for next week:

Concrete cutting operations will continue, preparations for asphalt begin, curb and gutter placement at the median islands.
