Two people are facing criminal charges following a high speed chase that began in Marathon County and ended when the vehicle started on fire near Bowler, according to police.

The high speed pursuit began shortly after 5:30 p.m. when police pulled over a vehicle for an equipment violation on Hwy. 29 in Marathon County. Both occupants of the vehicle, a man and a woman, gave police false names before fleeing.

Officers gave chase with speeds topping 100 mph as the vehicle wound through Marathon and parts of Shawano Counties, police said. The pursuit ended when the vehicle abruptly stopped and started on fire while traveling on Hwy. D and both suspects were taken into custody.

No names have been released. This story will be updated after official charges are filed in Marathon County Circuit Court.
