The YMCA will host a bus trip to the Upper Peninsula on Oct. 3 and there’s room for you to join. First stop: Copper Peak.
This ski-flying hill was built in 1969 by Lauren Larsen and hosted many World Cup ski jumping competitions. The Copper Peak Adventure Ride in Ironwood, Michigan, lets visitors rise to the same heights as the ski-jumping athletes who have flown down the hill in years past.
After an 800-foot chair lift ride to the crest of the hill, visitors take an 18-story elevator to the main observation deck for a view of fall colors. If you are adventurous, you can then walk an additional eight stories to the top starting gate, where you can view three states, Canada and Lake Superior on a clear day.
Following the tour at Copper Peak, the group will have a soup and sandwich lunch at Big Powderhorn Lodge before traveling to the George W. Brown Jr. Ojibwa Museum in Lac du Flambeau.
The bus will depart the YMCA Aspirus Branch in Weston at 7:15 a.m. and return at about 7:30 p.m. The cost of the full day trip is $95 for members and $105 for non-members.
