A portion of I-39 south of Wausau is closed Sunday due to a crash, according to the Wisconsin Department of Transportation.

The crash, which was reported just before 3 p.m., was in the southbound lanes of I-39 just beyond Hwy. 34.

There’s no word yet on injuries.

Dozens of crashes have been reported throughout the area amid a strong winter storm that passed through the area on Sunday.

Officials are urging residents to stay home Sunday evening even after the snowfall ended. The Marathon County Sheriff’s Department, in a Facebook post, warned that roadways appearing to be clear will most likely have black ice due to road temperatures and refreeze conditions.

A snow emergency has been declared for Wausau, which means street parking is prohibited from 9 p.m. Sunday until 10 a.m. on Monday. Violations can result in a $100 fine.
