Wausau Pilot & Review

The Wausau Cyclones took on the Peoria Mustangs over the weekend as the Cyclones closed out their 47-game regular season schedule. Wausau won 3-2 in overtime on Friday night and 3-2 Saturday night to bring their season record to (21-24-1-1).

Friday night Wausau got on the board first at 4:16 with a goal by Hayden Shoemake. Peoria tied the game at one apiece thirteen minutes later with a goal from Tristan Trudel. The game remained tied until 14:08 of the second period when Dylan Chapman gave Wausau a 2-1 lead with his 5th goal of the season. Wausau held that lead all the way until 18:25 of the third. That’s when Hubert Guzy tied the game at two. The game went into overtime and team leading goal scorer Gage Vierzba netted the game-winner just 49 seconds into overtime to give Wausau a 3-2 win. Mitch Miscevich earned the win by stopping 33 of 35 shots.

After the win on Friday Wausau was looking to finish the regular season strong headed into their playoff series versus Rochester. After a scoreless 1st period Gage Vierzba got the Cyclones on the board first at 7:17 of the second. Nolan Gifford extended the lead nine minutes later with his fifth goal of the season. Peoria answered back just 30 seconds later as Massimo Polistina to make it a 2-1 game. Wausau made it a two-goal game again at 1:47 of the third period. Peoria added a goal at 10:06 of the third period, but it wasn’t enough as Wausau swept the series from Peoria. Ryan Burke picked up the win in net by stopping 31 of 33 shots.
