MERRILL – Following a pair of close losses over the weekend, the Wausau East boys basketball team got back to its winning ways with a 70-62 win over Merrill in a Wisconsin Valley Conference matchup Monday at Merrill High School.

The Lumberjacks outscored Merrill by four points in each half to earn the conference victory, improving to 14-5 overall and 6-3 in the WVC. Merrill drops to 7-11 and remains winless in conference play at 0-7.

Jaydan Garrett scored a season-high 25 points, going 7-for-11 from the field and 9-for-11 at the free throw line, to lead the way for the Lumberjacks. He also had eight rebounds in the victory.

Jesse Napgezek added 16 points, and Charlie Cayley had 11 points and 13 rebounds for East.

Wausau East was 23-for-29 at the free throw line, while Merrill went 16-for-27.

Both teams are back in action Thursday with WVC games as Merrill will host Stevens Point and Wausau East travels to Wisconsin Rapids.
