Joyce M. Pevytoe

Joyce M. Pevytoe, age 92, of Rib Mountain, passed away on Thursday, February 1, 2024, at Wellington Place Assisted Living in Rib Mountain.

She was born on November 7, 1931, in Unity, Wisconsin to Gordon and Eleva Forbish.

Joyce grew up on a farm near Colby Wisconsin along with her parents and three brothers. She graduated from Colby High School and moved to the Wausau area. In August of 1955 she married William H. Pevytoe. They bought a home in the Rib Mountain and started their life together raising their two sons. Being the only “girl” in the family was nothing new to Joyce so she always participated in family activities. Joyce was a devoted Sunday School Teacher at Grace United Church of Christ in Wausau for many years. She enjoyed teaching the youngest children about the church and religion. As her sons got older Joyce expanded the things she did to be involved with her family. When the boys were old enough to deer hunt, she joined them. Many a hunting day was spent with her sitting in a comfortable deer stand and enjoying the outdoors. Yet there were many times when she was the successful hunter with her patience and perseverance in the woods. As her sons became involved in other interests so did Joyce. She was involved in Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, and later Explorer Scouts. Joyce was one of the first adults to work with the Explorer Scouts in the area and was recognized by the Scouting leadership with several awards for her commitment to youth.

After many years of working appliance repair for a Wausau store William and Joyce decided to take the leap and start their own business doing the same. Together they established Appliance Service in Rib Mountain. Joyce quickly became the office manager for the Appliance Service. She maintained the records and would deal with the customers establishing service times and needs. William Pevytoe provided the service repairs and later was joined by the youngest son, Jeffery as he learned the repair trade. In March 1993 Willam passed away. Joyce and Jeffery continued to operate the business which still provides service today. Joyce did the office aspects of the business until she was in her late 80’s enjoying the contact with the customers and keeping busy.

As Joyce advanced in age and her health needs changed, she moved to Wellington Place Assisted Living. She established many friendships with the staff and residents at Wellington Place. The Family of Joyce Pevytoe wish to express their great appreciation for the loving care that she received from the staff at Wellington Place and in the final months from Aspirus Hospice care.

Joyce Pevytoe is survived by her sons, Rodney (Barbara) Pevytoe of Eagle River, Jeffery Pevytoe of Rib Mountain, two grandchildren, Laura (Will) Bradly, and William (Kaitlyn) Pevytoe and three great grandsons, Mason and Logan Pevytoe and Franklyn Bradly.

She is preceded in death by her husband, William “Bill” Pevytoe, her parents and three brothers, Eugene, Thomas, and Raymond (Forbish).

A memorial service will take place at a future date at the Helke Funeral home.

Kathleen L. Goessl

Kathleen “Katie” Linda Goessl passed away on Saturday, February 3, 2024, at Aspirus Hospital in Wausau, WI.

Katie was born on November 10, 1961, to Brynolf and Phyllis Haataja in Escanaba, Michigan. She was the fourth born out of eleven children: Karen, Linda Sue, Karla, Katie, John, James, Jody, Kay, Kristine, Kimberly and Jeffrey.

Katie met and fell in love with Jeffrey Goessl. They were married on December 31, 1984. Together they had two daughters, Melissa and Sara. Throughout their 40-year marriage, Katie and Jeff “adopted” and helped raise multiple children, including Katie’s youngest brother, Jeffrey; Katie’s nieces, Bonnie and Mandy; Katie’s great-niece, Analicia; and Katie’s nephew, Josh.

Katie was a graduate of Mosinee High School, served in the National Guard, and then attended North Central Technical College, where she earned a degree in Business Management.

Katie truly believed her calling was family devotion. She was the glue that held the family together. She was always there to help someone in need, organize family events, and many nights were spent with her the phone talking to a close friend or family member having a meaningful conversation with a puzzle at her fingertips. She absolutely loved spending as much time as she could with her biological grandchildren – Giana, Jocelyn, Caiden, Myles, Lexi and Lana – and her “adopted” grandchildren – Jeremy, Lila, April, June, Ruby and Ava.

Katie was a woman with many talents and interests. She was a 4-H leader, she always had a puzzle out on the table, an avid gardener, and a seasonal camper. There was nothing she enjoyed more than a hot, long bath. She was also a night owl who enjoyed her weekly games of pool or playing slots at the casino.

Katie was spiritual in her own way, believing you can find God everywhere – even under a rock. She would meditate in her garden, praying for others. She believed her own mother became a cardinal who would come visit her on occasion. No doubt, Katie is now looking down on us all, wanting us all to stay united in family and live happy lives despite what hardships are thrown at us.

Katie is reunited in death with her father, Brynolf Haataja; her mother, Phyllis Harry-Haataja; her sister, Linda Sue Haataja; her brother, Jody Brian Haataja; and her brother-in-law, Ted Wierzba.

Katie is survived by her husband, her children, and her siblings: Karen (Pat), Karla, John, James, Kay, Kristine, Kimberly, and Jeff (Sara). She is also survived by her grandchildren, nieces, nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews.

Visitation will be held on Saturday, February 17th from 9 AM – 11 AM at the First  Unitarian Universalist Church, 504 Grant Street, Wausau. A funeral service will follow at 11 AM in the Church with a luncheon to follow.

Jamie J. Phillips

Jamie John Phillips, 78, went peacefully to his eternal home surrounded by family on February 3rd, 2024, at Aspirus Wausau Hospital, from complications due to Parkinson’s.

Jim was born April 28, 1945, in Wausau, to the late Florence (Maldonis) and John Phillips. On May 13, 1967, he married Lynn Baumann in Marathon.

Jim was a very hard worker and his daughters and grandchildren learned from that work ethic. He built his own home, which he lived in for over 50 years, and helped with each of his daughter’s homes, adding to his carpentry skills and knowledge.

Jim worked part-time at Deininger’s Citgo Station in Marathon for many years while also working full-time at HammerBlow Corp. in Wausau. When HammerBlow closed down, he went to work at Cequent Manufacturing in Mosinee, until his retirement.

He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Rib Falls, from the time he was married until Zion merged with St. Matthew’s, Marathon, in 2021 when he became a member there. He served as Church Council President, and on many other committees at Zion.

Jim enjoyed a good game of sheepshead with whoever was willing to play, going on motorcycle rides with Lynn, a round of golf on a nice summer day, a good meal with at least a few desserts, grilling the best brat or hamburger, working in his huge garden, keeping the perfect lawn, or relaxing with a good movie. But most of all, he enjoyed spending time with his family and all his grandkids. The grandkids enjoyed listening to Grandpa’s stories of his younger days, having Grandpa push them on the swings in the backyard or enjoying time with him in the sandbox, which he made for them to have at their own houses.

Jim made it a point to attend all of his daughter’s school activities, like sports or band/choir concerts to cheer them on, continuing to do so when the grandchildren started school. He did this up until his health made it difficult to get him there, but always was happy to hear about all of their accomplishments and adventures.

Jim taught his girls how to swim, play ping pong, drive a stick shift, and ice-skate. He was also always the driver. He drove them to all their activities, starting with baton competitions for Heather, when she was 3 years old, up to pulling the huge horse trailer for horse shows, when the girls were in their early teens. He was always the driver on road trips, even when his daughters had their licenses. Jim enjoyed a nice vacation, whether by plane, car or motorcycle, visiting places such as Hawaii, Las Vegas, Yellowstone, and many more.

Jim is survived by his wife, Lynn, of 56 years; two daughters, Heather (Jeff) Laabs of Merrill, Heidi (Russell) Hornung of Marathon, grandchildren, Tanner, Trinity, and Treyten Hornung, and Halle Laabs. He is also survived by his brothers-in-law, Henry (Peggy) Baumann, Robert Baumann, Paul “Jerry” Bohnert, Chuck Howe, and 5 nieces and 1 nephew.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and his two sisters, Alice Bohnert and Salli Howe.

Private services will be held.  Peterson/Kramer Funeral Home is assisting with arrangements.

“And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away.” Revelation 21:4

Susan K. Thompson

In Loving Memory of Susan (Susie) Kay Thompson-Simon, 67 of Mosinee, who passed away February 5th, 2024 at Marshfield Clinic Weston Center.

With heavy hearts, we let go of our dear loved one, a cherished soul who touched the lives of many with her kindness, beauty, and unwavering love for animals, especially dogs. Susie passed away peacefully with her loving family at her side, straight into the arms of her Savior, Jesus Christ & her beloved parents. She leaves behind a legacy of love, compassion and joy.

Susan was born on July 23, 1956 in Wausau, WI to Arletta (Kohnhorst) Thompson and Kenneth Thompson. She enjoyed gardening & watching the birds appear on her feeders with a special fondness for cardinals. Susie was an animal lover, collected lion decor and wore animal prints or flowy dresses. She was a devoted employee at many local companies including Hoffman House, Holiday Inn, and SNE. She found her calling as a CNA at Mountain Terrace Senior Living. Her family was so proud of her to achieve such a wonderful position where she lived out her legacy of helping others. She truly cared for others and missed her residents when she was not with them.

Her true worth was not in the money that she made but in the lives that she touched and built relationships on trust and true kindness. Susie was more than just an animal lover; she was a beacon of light in the lives of those fortunate enough to know her. Her warmth and acceptance knew no bounds, and she had a rare gift of seeing the beauty in everyone without judgment. Her infectious laughter and zest for life made every moment in her presence a joyous occasion. Susie loved spending time with her family, making lifelong, loving memories together.

Susie’s spirit of adventure and love for life was contagious, she approached every opportunity with fun and laughter. Her absence leaves a void in the hearts of all who knew her, but her memory will forever be cherished and celebrated.

Susie is survived by her loving husband, Lee Patrick Simon and her two fur babies, Stanley & Lil Bear, stepson, Kasey, sisters Sharon (William) Yach, Wausau, Debbie Purdy, Denver, Colorado, step-brother, Randy (Debbie) Letarski, Oshkosh, her nieces: Tracy (Mike) Osborn-Stelzer, Tammy (Mike) Waraksa, Terri (Shawn) Yeager, Ashley (Edwin) Bonayon; nephews: Shane Marks, Marshall (JoJo) Marks; great nieces: Aleigha, Ashlyn, Melina, Makayla, Charlotte, Nia, Presley, Faith, Austyn; great nephews: Carter, Easton, Ethan, Benson, Jase, Asher, Wisdom, Liam, Oakley. She is also survived by her loving mother-in-law Carole (Ken) Arndt, sister-in-laws, Terrie (Rick) Covin and Jodie (Gary) Liddle.

She was preceded in death by, her beloved mother, Arletta (Kohnhorst) Thompson, her father, Kenneth Thompson, her step-mother, Viola (Vi) Thompson and step-sister Gail Esker.

Her family will find solace in the countless cherished memories they shared with her. Though she may be gone from our sight, her spirit lives on in the gentle wag of a dog’s tail. May Susie’s legacy of love, kindness, and boundless joy continue to inspire us all as we carry her memory, always. Rest in peace, dear Susie. You will be deeply missed.
