Wausau Pilot & Review

UPDATE: A 76-year-old Schofield man died Friday in a crash east of Wausau, according to the Wisconsin State Patrol.

The crash was reported at about 12:15 p.m. Feb. 9 on County Hwy. C at Sunset Drive near Elderon, in Marathon County.

Police say the driver of a 2022 Chevrolet Trax was headed east on County Hwy. C when he left the roadway and struck a large rock in the south ditch. The vehicle started on fire after the collision.

Good Samaritans pulled the driver from the vehicle and performed CPR. Lifesaving measures were continued by emergency medical personnel but were not successful.

The driver was pronounced dead at the scene. His name has not yet been released.

The Wisconsin State Patrol is conducting the crash investigation.

Witnesses say one person was pulled from a vehicle Friday in a fiery crash near Wittenberg, with multiple agencies on scene.

The crash was reported at about 12:10 p.m. at 181223 County Hwy. C near Honeydew Drive in the town of Franzen. According to initial emergency transmissions, the person pulled from the vehicle was unconscious and bystanders were performing CPR as rescue personnel were called to the scene.

SAFER ambulance along with the Wisconsin State Patrol and the Marathon County Sheriff’s Department joined crews from Wittenberg in responding to the scene, and a portion of Hwy. C is shut down and rerouted.

There’s no word yet on the severity of the victim’s injuries or whether any other passengers were inside the vehicle. This is a developing story that will be updated.
