WAUSAU – Wausau West used a big free throw advantage and a dominant second half to take down crosstown rival Wausau East 63-47 in a Wisconsin Valley Conference girls basketball game Friday night at East High School.

Wausau West made 17 of 22 free throws in the second half (24 of 34 overall), while East finished just 12 of 27 at the line in a game marred by 51 total fouls.

West led 29-28 at halftime before busting it open, largely due to its free throw shooting, and improve to 9-12 overall and 7-4 in the WVC.

Kelly Kray had 16 points, Harper Mead added 15, and Ayla Christensen and Paige Anderson both scored 11 for West.

Claire Coushman had 19 points and Sydney Crawford chipped in 11 for Wausau East (6-15, 2-9 WVC).

Both teams will wrap up their regular-season schedules next week. Wausau East plays its Wisconsin Valley Conference finale Monday at Merrill before playing a nonconference game at Newman Catholic on Tuesday. West hosts Marshfield on Thursday and Reedsburg on Saturday, Feb. 17.

The WIAA playoff brackets will be announced Sunday. Play begins Feb. 20.
