Wausau Pilot & Review

HUDSON – The D.C. Everest boys swim team will have a large contingent at the state meet again as it earned seven berths after competition at a WIAA Division 1 Boys Swimming & Diving Sectional on Saturday at Hudson High School.

The Evergreens had four sectional champions and three others qualify for the 2024 WIAA State Boys Swimming & Diving Championships, which will be held next Saturday, Feb. 17, at Waukesha South High School.

Sectional champions and anyone finishing in the top 24 statewide among those competing at the six sectional meets, earn bids for the state meet.

David Mayer and Will Van Ermen will both be swimming in four events at state, and Keaton Barwick will participate in three after a banner day at the sectional for the Evergreens.

Mayer won the 50-yard freestyle in 20.82 seconds and the 100 freestyle in 45.64 seconds, while Van Ermen took second in both the 200 individual medley (1:58.49) and the 100 backstroke (51.96).

Mayer, Van Ermen, Barwick and Adam Swedlund won the 200 medley relay in 1:34.57, and Van Ermen, Barwick, Wes Polley and Mayer were first in the 200 freestyle relay in 1:27.10.

Barwick took third in the 100 butterfly in 52.63 seconds to also secure a spot at state.

Wausau East/West also competed at the sectional but did not have any state qualifiers.

Marcus Gruszynski had East/West’s top individual finishes, taking 11th in the 200 individual medley (2:13.35) and the 100 butterfly (1:00.84).
