WESTON – D.C. Everest earned 11 spots and Wausau West nine at next week’s sectional after competition at a WIAA Division 1 Wrestling Regional on Saturday at D.C. Everest High School.

Marshfield finished with 273 points, with D.C. Everest second with 227 and both advance to the Division 1 team sectional at Menomonie on Tuesday. Marshfield will face Hudson in one semifinal at the team sectional, with Menomonie taking on D.C. Everest in the other. The winners will face each other in another dual meet, with the victor earning a spot in the 2024 WIAA State Team Wrestling Tournament, which will be held March 1-2 at the UW Fieldhouse in Madison. Marshfield was the runner-up at the state team tournament last year.

D.C. Everest finished second (227 points) and Wausau West third (178) in the team standings. Wausau East had one sectional qualifier and was seventh among the eight teams with 64.5 points.

The top four finishers at the regional move on to the D-1 individual sectional next Saturday, Feb. 17, at Marshfield. with the top two finishers in each weight class at the sectional qualify for the 2024 WIAA State Individual Wrestling Tournament, which will be at the Kohl Center in Madison on Feb. 22-24.

D.C. Everest had three regional champions as Easton Cooper won the 126-pound title, Josh Danens was first at 138 and Deakin Trotzer won at 144.

Other Evergreens qualifying for sectionals were Blake Bangtson and Daytona Pagel, who were third at 157 and 190 pounds, respectively, and five runner-up finishers – Caleb Jaeger (113), Carson Kempf (150), Gavin Madson (165), Niko Kleinschmidt (175) and Oscar Latendresse (285).

Sam Galang won the 132-pound title and William McCorison won at 285 pounds for Wausau West.

Also moving on to sectionals are runner-up finishers Samuel Volm (106 pounds), Henry Ruffi (120) and William Ford (190), Henry Galang (150) and Sawyer Zydzik (175) both took third, and Timothy Gospodarek (1650 placed fourth.

Wausau East’s lone sectional qualifier was Noah Rhea, who placed third at 138 pounds.
