The man accused of stabbing a Mosinee Police officer who was responding to a welfare check last month has been formally charged and is being held on a $100,000 cash bond, court records show.

Randy L. Beardsley, 41, faces charges of battery to a law enforcement officer, substantial battery and obstructing an officer in connection with the Jan. 19 incident. Charges were filed Feb. 13 in Marathon County Circuit Court.

According to a criminal complaint, the officer was wearing a full uniform and badge when he saw a man walking on the sidewalk on Main Street who appeared to be struggling to function. The officer turned his squad around to check on the man and discovered him lying in an alley, breathing but not responding to questions about his well-being, court records show.

The man, later identified as Beardsley, allegedly stabbed the officer in the leg. Additional units responded to the scene and a K-9 officer assisted in capturing Beardsley, who lists a Mosinee address.

The officer was taken to a local hospital for treatment and was released. Beardsley was also injured and was taken to a hospital, where he was allegedly belligerent with medical staff and officers before being taken to jail.

A probable cause hearing was held Jan. 23 for Beardsley, and the cash bond ordered at that time was continued in a Feb. 13 initial appearance. A preliminary hearing will be held Feb. 21.

You are advised that a charge is merely an accusation and that a defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
