Republican Mosinee Mayor Brent Jacobson announced on Tuesday that he will run for State Assembly this fall in the newly created 87th District.

Rep. James Edming, also a Republican, currently holds the seat for the 87th, which covers Sawyer, Rusk, Taylor, and the northwest side of Marathon County. After Gov. Tony Evers signed new legislative district maps into law, those boundaries will change dramatically. The new 87th Assembly District includes portions of Marathon, Shawano, Portage and Waupaca Counties.

Jacobson, 39, is a Mosinee native and has served as the city’s mayor since 2015. He is a practicing attorney and small business owner who previously served on the Marathon County Board with committee assignments to the Public Safety Committee, Central Wisconsin Airport Board, and Rules Committee. He has chaired a multi-jurisdictional fire and EMS department, planning commission, and tourism commission.

“As I talk to people in and around my community, they are looking for strong leadership and fiscal responsibility from our elected officials,” Jacobson said, in a press release issued Tuesday. “Over the last eight and a half years, I have worked to move the community I have been entrusted with leading forward while being a responsible steward of taxpayer money. While some communities have struggled to attract businesses and residents, we have gained them. I plan to use the same drive and determination to move our state and region forward if chosen by the people of Central Wisconsin to be their next representative in the Legislature.”

Republican Pat Snyder, who represents Wisconsin’s 85th Assembly District, announced earlier this week he plans to run to retain his seat despite new maps placing his residence in in the 87th District.
