A 24-year-old pedestrian was seriously injured after being struck by a passing vehicle Wednesday morning in Stevens Point, police said.

According to the Point Plover Metro Wire, Portage Co. dispatchers received a 911 call at 7:42 a.m. on Feb. 21 reporting that a woman had been struck by a vehicle and that her face was covered with blood.

Stevens Point police blocked off Fourth Ave. between Stanley and Reserve streets while officers from SPPD and the UW-Stevens Point police department spoke with witnesses and evaluated the scene, PPMW reported.

Police say a 21-year-old man was driving east on Fourth Avenue when he struck the woman, who was in the crosswalk headed west. No citations have been issued, but the crash remains under investigation.

Battalion Chief Victim Kedrowski from SPFD, one of the responding agencies, confirmed a woman, was stabilized and transported, emergent, to Wausau.

Kedrowski said paramedics initially called for a medical helicopter, but none were available so the woman was taken by ambulance. Her current condition has not been released.

No names have been released. This is a developing story that will be updated.
