One person died after breaking through the ice while riding a UTV in the northwoods, police said.

Rescue crews were paged at about 3:30 p.m. Tuesday to the Turtle Flambeau Flowage off of O’Mearas Road, in Mercer, after a 911 call reporting the incident. The man and his UTV were underwater when crews arrived at the scene.

The UTV was located the same day, but crews were unable to recover the man until the following day. His body was pulled from about 15 feet of water at about 4:30 p.m. Wednesday by divers, officials said.

The name of the 78-year-old victim has not been publicly released.

Responding agencies include Mercer Fire, Mercer Ambulance, Iron County Sheriff’s Office, Marathon County Dive Team, Douglas County Dive Team, Manitowish Waters Fire Company, Wisconsin DNR, Iron County Emergency Management, Iron County Coroner and Newbold Fire and Rescue.
