STEVENS POINT – Explore the teaching and research collections at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point as part of the Olson Museum of Natural History 2024 Collection Crawl in April.
The event will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. April 6, beginning and ending at the Olson Museum of Natural History, 2001 Fourth Ave., Stevens Point. It is free and open to all ages. Participants can explore the collections across three campus academic buildings, collecting a stamp on their passport at each site. Completed passports can be redeemed at the museum for a prize.
“The Collection Crawl has been a long-standing tradition at the museum for over a decade,” said Brigid Ferkett, an outreach specialist for the museum. “We are excited to bring back this public event to showcase not only our collections, but our future museum spaces in the science building. It’s an exciting time for our museum and for our community.”
The Collection Crawl’s featured collection is entomology, the study of insects. Learn some of the lesser-known traits of insects and how they are collected for the museum. Participants can also hold a hissing cockroach.
In addition to the exhibits, families can enjoy shows at the Allen F. Blocher Planetarium, on the second floor of the UW-Stevens Point Science Building. Show times and themes are below:
· April 6 – 9 a.m. “Habitat Earth” – Journey through Earth’s ecosystems to explore the connections between all life on our planet.
· April 6 – 10 a.m. “Totality” – Learn about lunar and solar eclipses and look forward to upcoming eclipses and where to witness them.
· April 6 – Noon, “Laser Shows – Legends of the Constellations: Orion” – A great laser show suitable for families with young children.
