WAUSAU — Both Hatley and the Greater Wausau Area have been officially designated as Ice Age Trail communities, Visit Wausau announced this week.

This recognition comes from the Ice Age Trail Alliance and places these communities among a distinguished group that leverages the natural beauty and historical significance of the Ice Age National Scenic Trail for economic and social benefits.

The Ice Age Trail, a 1,200-mile footpath entirely within Wisconsin, showcases the unique landscapes shaped by ancient glaciers. Marathon County, home to the newly designated communities, features more than 40 miles of this trail, including segments such as Plover River, Dells of the Eau Claire and Ringle.

“As Wisconsin’s Basecamp, this recognition not only underscores our region’s rich natural assets, but also our commitment to outdoor recreation and cultural enrichment,” said Tim White, executive director of Visit Wausau, in a news release. “It enhances our ongoing efforts to attract visitors, residents and prospective citizens to experience the diverse outdoor and cultural amenities we offer.”

Celebratory events for the designation will be held later in the year, with details to be announced, inviting community members and visitors alike to partake in the festivities.
