Marathon County Supervisor Tony Sherfinski is likely to petition for a recount for the Dist. 16 seat, after unofficial tallies show he lost by a single vote to Bill Conway in Tuesday’s election.

Sherfinski on Wednesday asked County Clerk Kim Trueblood about the recount process. The Canvas Board is scheduled to meet on Monday morning to start the certification process. The certifying board includes Trueblood and a representative each from the Democratic and Republican Parties.

A candidate cannot officially petition for a recount until the election is certified and results are official, Trueblood told Wausau Pilot & Review.

Conway, who lost to Sherfinski in 2022, won Tuesday by a count of 255-254 for the next two-year term.

Sherfinski is among four incumbents who failed to retain a seat on the 38-member board this year. Three of those four incumbents lost to the challengers they had beaten in 2022. In Dist. 15, Randy Fifrick lost his seat in 2022 to Joel Straub, but regained it in Tuesday’s election. Similarly, Chris Voll in Dist. 23 lost to David Baker in 2022 and won the seat back this week.

In Dist. 10, incumbent Donna Krause lost her seat to challenger Randy Radtke.

Meanwhile, no one has filed for a recount for Wausau City Council seat. The closest margin for Wausau City Council is in Dist. 8, where incumbent Alder Sarah Watson beat challenger Joshua Dirks by 18 votes.

City Clerk Kaitlyn Bernarde said that after the results are certified – it is on Thursday for the City Council – candidates will have until 5 p.m. on the 3rd business day following the last meeting day of the board of canvassers.
