Marathon County Dist. 16 Supervisor-elect Bill Conway’s margin of victory increased by two votes Friday following a recount requested by incumbent Supervisor Tony Sherfinski.

Marathon County Clerk Tim Trueblood said the final tally was 257 for Conway and 254 for Sherfinski, who on Thursday filed a petition for the recount after losing to Conway on April 2.

The Board of Canvassers, comprising Trueblood, Deb Bouche and Diane Drinsinger, determined that the two overvotes were cast for Conway. Those “overvotes” were from the City of the Schofield. Drinsinger was appointed by Democratic Party of Marathon County since the original member of the canvass board, Michelle Van Krey, is on vacation and unavailable.

“The two overvoted ballots were found and were determined by the canvass board to be votes for Bill Conway,” said Trueblood, in a news release.

Sherfinski this week alleged that a mistake was “committed in Ward 6 of the Village of Weston and the City of the Schofield in the counting and return of votes cast for the office of County Supervisor.” He further said that “there is a discrepancy between the total of Schofield votes for County Board Supervisor when compared with the tally of candidate votes, undervotes and overvotes.” The district encompasses the City of Schofield and Ward 6 in the Village of Weston.

Conway, who lost to Sherfinski in 2022, will be sworn in this month.
