Wausau Pilot & Review

This season, the Marathon County Public Library is sharing Sensational Summer Reads with Wausau Pilot & Review readers. Each week during the summer, Wausau Pilot will feature one recommended book for adults and one for children, handpicked by MCPL staff. Here are this week’s picks:

Stickler Loves the World, by Lane Smith

Stickler is an odd creature with an ever-changing number of eyes and a great appreciation for sticks. Not just sticks, however, but all the wonderful, natural things that exist in our world. As Stickler wonders what it would be like to experience it all again for the first time, they bump into what might be an alien. They have trouble communicating, but it seems like a perfect opportunity for Stickler to show the alien their planet and the beauty it holds. With a message that reminds us to slow down and admire the world around us a little more often, this book would be great to read before heading out for a nature walk.

“Slade House,” by David Mitchell

In a narrow alley of brick walls, if you look closely, and if the conditions are right, you might find the entrance to Slade House. You’ll be greeted and brought inside. While you might want to leave, it will soon become clear that you can’t. Every nine years, the siblings who own the house extend an invitation to someone who is lonely, or different or lost. But what happens after your hosts close the door? Spanning generations, this novel, by the author of “Cloud Atlas” will have you searching for clues about the strange brother and sister who own the house and their guests.
