WAUSAU – Two Wausau parks will now be known under new names, in a move to avoid confusion for residents.

Alexander Park will now be known as Alexander Airport Park, while Airport Park will now go by Airport Sports Park. The name changes were approved this month unanimously by members of the city’s Parks and Recreation Committee.

Meanwhile, Alexander Airport Park is undergoing significant renovations to implement an airport theme. The park will have new aviation stations to teach children about flight and the history of the Wausau Downtown Airport. Playground equipment will also be exchanged for new equipment with airplane themes.

Plans are also underway to move a Vietnam-era Corsair fighter jet from its current location near the VFW building on River Drive into the park to complete the aviation theme.

The Southeast Side Neighborhood Group and the airport have been raising funds for months to support the reconstruction of the park, and have already raised more than $500,000.

Construction is expected to begin in mid-July and should not affect the annual Balloon Rally held at the airport.
