Google’s program shares tips and how-to’s to teach kids to stay safe and secure on the web

NEWS RELEASE – Today, Google and Attorney General Brad Schimel visited John Muir Middle School to participate in the Online Safety Roadshow: How to Be Internet Awesome, an online safety assembly developed by Google for middle school students.

Two Google employees delivered the 45 minute presentation, which focuses on five tips for staying safe and being smart online. They covered topics including: sharing with care, setting strong passwords, using settings, identifying online scams, and being kind online.

Attorney General Schimel participated in today’s presentation at John Muir Middle School. He opened the assembly by highlighting the importance of online safety to the students, and competed in the password faceoff challenge, where students are asked to come up with the strongest possible password.

“The internet provides countless benefits to society and has changed the way we learn and do business, yet it provides many opportunities for bad actors to target our children and access their personal information,” said AG Schimel. “I appreciate Google’s efforts to educate Wisconsin youth and give them the tools and resources needed to stay safe online.”

“With students having greater access to the Internet through cell phones and other devices, it is important that they learn to use these tools responsibly,” said Amber Tillman, a Google spokesperson. “The Online Safety Roadshow: How to Be Internet Awesome teaches students how to be smart and safe online through a fun and interactive assembly.”

The Online Safety Roadshow: How to Be Internet Awesome is a Google program designed to educate parents and students on how to be more successful and safe online. The presentation is a 45 minute assembly that teaches middle school students how to be smart about the content they share online. It focuses on important skills, including how to create a safe and memorable password, identifying phishing scams, and more.
