Wausau West High School “Warrior Manufacturing” students worked with University Wisconsin Stevens Point Treehaven to extract lumber, using a portable sawmill, from a large red oak tree reclaimed from a Wausau School District property.

Students learned how timber is made, selected, what to look for in a tree, heartwood vs. sapwood in tree, how to calculate board feet, and many other aspects of the timber industry.

Students say they enjoyed this unique experience and are excited for the opportunity to use this beautiful red oak in projects when it returns from being kiln dried at Northcentral Technical College’s Antigo campus.
