WAUSAU — City leaders on Tuesday approved changes to the city’s longstanding “beer fence” ordinance, removing the requirement for a handful of event locations in Wausau.

The new rules eliminate the fencing requirement at four locations, three of which are spots where Wausau Events holds activities: The 400 Block, Wausau Downtown Airport, Athletic Park and Isle of Ferns Park. Wausau Police Chief Jeff Hardel voiced his support for the changes earlier this month at a public health and safety committee meeting.

Other locations for special events in which beer or wine are sold sold will still require either a 7-foot fence or two 4-foot fences surrounding the point of sale — at least, for now.

Council President Lisa Rasmussen called the changes a step in the right direction that could lead to additional rule changes down the road.
