STURGEON BAY, Wis. (AP) — A Sturgeon Bay police officer was accidentally shot and wounded while trying to handcuff a suspect during a domestic disturbance.

Officials say the officer was shot in the leg Monday at a residence in Sturgeon Bay as police were handcuffing a male suspect.

Police Capt. Dan Brinkman says the firearm of an officer not involved in handcuffing the suspect unintentionally discharged, striking the officer in the upper thigh. He was treated and released from a hospital.

Officers had responded to a report of a man threatening his father with a knife.
