Curiosity got the best of me and I finally tried Jemma’s on Bridge Street. It’s a sandwich and pizza joint with plenty of desserts and ice cream, so it sounded like it was right up my alley.

Given that it was 2 degrees Fahrenheit when I went, ice cream was not a huge a draw for me. Maybe in the summer months, but not during this winter.

The building has been home to a Hostess outlet and uniform shop in recent past, so I was wondering what a restaurant would look like in that spot. They went for an Americana style, with lots of wooden decorations in familiar shapes like stars and window shutters, and there’s an island up by the counter that’s skirted in reclaimed metal siding. It’s a good look, homey and functional.

The service was on point. The girl behind the counter was friendly, even though I messed up using the card reader like three times. I got the Southwest Turkey Sandwich with Cole slaw for a side and an unsweetened iced tea to drink. The food was served on a plate, not a tray, and was brought out to me.

The sandwich was fantastic, fresh ingredients, little spicy (though spiciness is highly subjective) and the bread was very good. The Cole slaw was good as well, and a decent alternative to chips. Needless to say, I plan to return to try more of the menu.

Jemma’s is a win, no two ways about it. Good food served by nice people. Next time you’re in the neighborhood, check them out!
