WAUSAU — Police say an hours-long standoff on the city’s near east side was prompted by a report of shots fired late Thursday in the area of N. Third Avenue and Norton Street.

The shots were reported around 11:30 p.m., police said. No one was injured.

A suspect in the shooting, identified as 35-year-old Bennie Green, then pointed a firearm at police and barricaded himself in a home in the 100 block of Maple Street, according to Wausau Police Lt. Andrew Hartwig. Members of the SWAT team secured the area and negotiated with Green, who surrendered at around 9 a.m. Friday.

Green was taken to the Marathon County Jail on a felony parole warrant out of Colorado, police said. He is also facing a charge of possessing a firearm as a convicted felon.

Police had cordoned off a section of roads in the area of Second Avenue and Maple Street for several hours as the standoff unfolded.
