The children are being treated at American Family Children’s Hospital in Madison.

The bus was carrying about 30 people from Hope Christian School in Milwaukee on Wednesday when the driver pulled to the shoulder of Interstate 39 near DeForest because of mechanical problems, police said. According to the Department of Transportation, the bus was rear-ended by a semi driven by 44-year-old Wayne Murphy of Indianapolis, who was arrested and taken to the Columbia County Jail.

Murphy now faces five counts of OWI causing injury and great bodily harm, authorities said.

Investigators say they were already looking for Murphy’s vehicle for driving erratically. Murphy was not injured in the crash.
