MAINE — These kids are voracious readers!

Winners of a reading contest at Maine Elementary School visit the Village of Maine Volunteer Fire Department as part of their reward for reading.

Six students at Maine Elementary School recently won the Fire Up for Reading program sponsored by the Village of Maine Volunteer Fire Department, REI Engineering, Inc., and Maine Elementary School.

The program challenged students to read books and then enter a contest based on time spent reading. On June 1, one winner in each grade (K-5) was picked up from his or her home in a fire truck, transported to the Maine Fire Department, treated to breakfast prepared by REI and given a bag of books and trinkets. The winning students were then taken to school in the fire truck.

The winners:

Kindergarten: Briah Landwehr

Grade 1: Kyson Hoesly

Grade 2: Holly Wolff

Grade 3: Cerena Ritzekura

Grade 4: Davin Yakey

Grade 5: Lindsay Monnot

“Supporting positive behavior is something we can all do more of,” said Tom Radenz, REI’s vice president, in an REI news release. “Also, witnessing the kids’ faces filled with excitement as they get out of the fire truck makes for a great way to start our day.”
