TOMAH — Police working to identify human remains discovered this week in a field in Tomah say the identification process could be a lengthy one.

Workers inspecting power lines and trees for trimming services made the discovery at about 11:30 a.m. Monday in an undeveloped field in the 700 block of Townline Avenue, according to the Tomah Police Department.

Testing showed the remains are human, which prompted the Monroe County Joint Investigative Task Force, the State Crime Lab Crime Scene Response Team, the Wisconsin State Patrol Technical Reconstruction Unit, the Monroe County Medical Examiner, and the Monroe County Communication Center to launch a death investigation.

Dozens of men, women and children are missing statewide, according to the Wisconsin Department of Justice Clearinghouse for Missing and Exploited Children and Adults. Some unsolved disappearances go back as far as the 1940s.

Investigators have so far not said how long the remains could have been at the site or whether they suspect foul play.
