WAUSAU — A felon wanted for nearly two years on four separate arrest warrants is back in custody and a Wausau woman is accused of allowing him to stay in her home.
Akeem Damarous Lamar Coleman faces charges of first degree recklessly endangering safety, carrying a concealed weapon, carrying a handgun where alcohol is sold and consumed, strangulation/suffocation, OWI causing injury, battery and other associated charges. A warrant for his arrest was issued on Oct. 28, 2015 and he remained at large until his weekend capture.
On Monday, Sept. 24, Coleman appeared in Marathon County Circuit Court and was ordered held on a $50,000 cash bond. The charges stem from incidents in 2012, 2013 and 2015 including an Oct. 18, 2015 report in which Coleman was accused of threatening a man with a gun at a Schofield strip club.
As the search intensified, Marathon County Crime Stoppers last week issued a public appeal asking for help in locating Coleman. That report was shared on multiple media sites including Wausau Pilot and Review. Then on Thursday, officers and SWAT team members searched a home at 3407 W. Sherman St. after receiving a tip that Coleman could be inside. Witnesses saw K9 officers and armored vehicles surrounding the home and a portion of Sherman Street was shut down briefly as officers secured the area.
In their search of the home, police discovered an identification card from Arkansas bearing Coleman’s name, but Coleman was not in the home. One man, Derrick Sahel, was arrested on a warrant for failure to pay fines, according to the police report. And another resident of the home, 31-year-old Kasey Schill, was booked on charges of harboring a felon — Coleman — and obstructing an officer by allegedly lying about her contact with him.
According to the criminal complaint, Schill told police she hadn’t seen Coleman for weeks and did not know the extent of Coleman’s past until reading the Wausau Pilot and Review story about his open warrants. Police later learned Coleman had stayed at the home as recently as Sept. 14, the complaint states.
Coleman was taken into custody over the weekend.
Schill was released Monday on a $3,000 signature bond and ordered not to have contact with Coleman, who remains in custody.
Coleman is due in court Oct. 3 for a preliminary hearing in three separate cases.
