AMHERST, Wis. — Police have identified a man who died Thursday in a Portage County crash as 58-year-old Douglas Curley, of Allenton.

The crash was reported at about 6:15 p.m. Thursday on U.S. Hwy. 10 at Hwy. B in Amherst.

Police say Curley was driving a pickup with a loaded trailer eastbound over a slippery bridge when he lost control on and veered into the median, causing the trailer to detach from the pickup. The pickup went airborne, landing on a westbound Jeep Cherokee before rolling and striking the guard rail, according to a news release.

Curley, the only occupant of the pickup, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Two people inside the Jeep, 61-year-old Michael Shimeta, of Cudahy; and Terry Scheer, 62, of Franklin; were transported to Ascension Saint Michael’s Hospital in Stevens Point with serious injuries, police said.

Westbound traffic on Hwy. 10 was detoured for about four hours after the crash, police said.
