WAUSAU PILOT AND REVIEW

TOWN OF CASSEL — Crews saved a number of animals Monday after a blaze broke out at an Edgar-area barn, but six animals are missing and likely perished in the fire, officials said.

The blaze was reported at about 12:22 p.m. near Soda Creek Road and Firecrown Lane in the Marathon County town of Cassel, near Edgar. Multiple crews responded and spent more than an hour containing the blaze but the barn was engulfed by the time firefighters arrived. The building is being described as a total loss.

A garage next to the barn was also damaged in the blaze.

No people were injured, but four cows and two pigs were unaccounted for Monday afternoon.

The cause of the blaze remains under investigation.
