WAUSAU PILOT AND REVIEW

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources Bureau of Law Enforcement is asking for the public’s help to identify who illegally shot a bald eagle in Marathon County.

The bald eagle is a federally protected bird.

DNR officials say the eagle was discovered March 23 lying in a roadside ditch near the intersection of Hwy. Y and Hansen Road in the town of Harrison, which is located in northeastern Marathon County. The bird was deceased when it was discovered.

The eagle was taken to the Raptor Education Group in Antigo, where investigators found lead fragments and wounds consistent to a gunshot wound.

“If you have any information, no matter how minor, that may be related to the illegal shooting of the eagle, contact the WDNR Violation Hotline by phone, text or online,” said Joanne Haas, a public information officer with the DNR.

The number to call is 800-TIP-WDNR or 800-847-9367.
