STEVENS POINT — The University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point will commemorate Sexual Assault Awareness Month with several free, public events throughout April.

National studies indicate one in four or five college women and one in 16 college men are sexually assaulted while attending school, and LGBTQ+ students report even higher rates of victimization, said Dean of Students Troy Seppelt in a UWSP news release.

“Sexual Assault Awareness Month is an annual campaign to raise awareness about the realities of sexual assault in our community and across the nation,” he said. “It is a time to educate community members about sexual violence, work together to prevent and end sexual assaults, and believe, support and honor survivors.”

To draw attention to the month-long awareness effort, the campus portion of Fourth Avenue will be renamed as Teal Street. At 1 p.m. April 1, at the corner of Fourth Avenue and Reserve Street, university and community leaders and UW-Stevens Point students will speak. The inclement weather site will be the Berg Gym lobby in Champions Hall (formerly the Health Enhancement Center), 2050 Fourth Ave., Stevens Point.

An information table will be available in the Dreyfus University Center concourse, 1015 Reserve St., from 4:45-6 p.m. every Tuesday in April and from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Wednesday, April 10. Learn about sexual assault and how to support survivors.

A survivor’s clothing display, “What Were You Wearing,” will be open to the public from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. April 15-17 in the Dreyfus University Center Laird Room. An evening showing will be offered April 16, from 5-7 p.m.

Self-care yoga will be offered from 6-7 p.m. April 24 in Allen Center Studio B, 400 Illinois Ave., Stevens Point.
