The Wisconsin Department of Transportation provides weekly road construction updates for counties in north central Wisconsin: Adams, Green Lake, Florence, Forest, Iron, Langlade, Lincoln, Marathon, Marquette, Menominee, Oneida, Portage, Price, Shawano, Vilas, Waupaca, Waushara and Wood.

The following updates are for the week of June 10. Construction schedules are dependent on favorable weather conditions and construction progress.

Green Lake and Waushara counties

Highway 49

Location: Highway 23 to South street (Green Lake to Berlin)

Schedule: May 13 to Oct. 15

Traffic impacts: Traffic will continue to be reduced to a single lane in each direction with temporary traffic signals between Highway A and South Street at the beginning of the week. This closure is anticipated to end sometime during the week. Various shoulders throughout the project will also be closed and there may be intermittent flagging operations throughout the project.

Anticipated work schedule for next week: Paving of roadway between Highway A and South Street, sign removal, culvert lining installations at Highway AA and Highway V, grading operations at Highway A and Highway V and restoration work throughout the project limits.

Green Lake County

Highway 91

Location: Berlin city limits to west Winnebago County line

Schedule: May 28 to mid-June

Traffic impacts: Daily flagging operations may be needed early in the week to finish work.

Anticipated work schedule for next week: June 10-12: Finish pavement markings and final cleanup.


Lincoln County

Highway 64 (Bridge Maintenance)

Location: Bridge over the Prairie River, City of Merrill

Schedule: May 14 to early August

Traffic impacts: Eastbound/Westbound Highway 64 will be reduced to one, 11-foot lane in each direction.

Pedestrian detour: East side of bridge, north toward T. B. Scott library, across Prairie River to Stange Public Park, North to East Third Street.

Anticipated work schedule for next week: Excavation activities and work on the bridge wings will occur. Crews will pour concrete for curb and gutter and perform crack sealing on the pier footing. Asphalt patching and rip-rap placement around the piers of water levels are low.

Highway 86

Location: Between Price County Highway YY and the Wisconsin River

Schedule: June 12 to Oct. 17

Traffic impacts: Traffic on Highway 86 will be reduced to a single lane with the use of flaggers during pavement sawing operations. All traffic lanes will be opened at the end of each work day.

Starting Monday, June 17, Highway 86 will be closed for two weeks from Highway O to Highway E for culvert and cable barrier replacements.

Detour: Traffic will be detoured via Highway 13, Highway 8 and Highway 51. Local traffic will be allowed as signed.

Anticipated work schedule for next week: Placement of traffic control signs, staking and pavement sawing.


Marathon County

Highway WW

Location: Wisconsin River Bridge, Brokaw (Village of Maine)

Schedule: April 22 to May 22, 2020

Traffic impacts: Traffic is currently maintained on a single lane, 10.5 feet in width, on the existing bridge with temporary traffic signals. Half of the bridge deck will be removed and constructed. Highway WW will be closed to traffic and be detoured June 14 beginning at 6 a.m. to June 17 at 6 a.m. The detour is Highway 51 to Bridge Street to Highway W.

Anticipated work schedule for next week: Rebar will be installed up to June 12. Contractors will continue to prepare bridge for concrete pouring on June 14.


Marquette County

Highway 22

Location: Main and Montello streets, Fifth Street to N. Junction Highway 23

Schedule: April 30 – July

Traffic Impacts: Pier work on the Montello and Fox River bridges begin on June 17. When that work begins, motorists can expect to encounter periodic flagging operations that will temporarily close a single lane over both bridges at times during this work.

Anticipated work schedule for next week: No work is scheduled for next week.

Highway 23

Location: City of Montello

Schedule: April 15 to Nov. 15

Traffic impacts: Highway 23 is closed from West Street to Lake Street. Starting June 10, the Lake Street and Highway 23 intersection will also be closed. Maps of local detours are posted at the website below.

Anticipated work schedule for next week: Crews will complete roadway grading and complete excavation of outfall basin.

Oneida County

Highway 51

Location: Between Minocqua Bridge to Lakeshore Drive in Downtown Minocqua

Schedule: May 6 to June 13

Traffic impacts: 

Motorists can expect to encounter one lane traffic on Highway 51 northbound and southbound between Minocqua Bridge and Lakeshore Drive. Parking will be limited to one side. Motorists may experience poor visibility at various times throughout the day. Expect travel delays. Pedestrians should anticipate sidewalk closures and alternate routes.

Anticipated work schedule for next week: Crews will continue pavement marking removal and replacement on Highway 51 south and northbound. Crews sill install new signs and restore areas behind curb and gutter and sidewalk replacements.

Highway 8 and Highway 47 Intersection 

Location: City of Rhinelander

Schedule: June 10 to Oct. 18

Traffic impacts: Flagging operations and shoulder closures begin June 10. Detour will not be in place until late June.

Anticipated work schedule for next week: Installation of traffic and erosion control. Construction of temporary lanes, crossovers and barriers needed for upcoming detour.

Oneida and Vilas counties

Highway 51

Location: Third Avenue to Tuckaway Drive

Schedule: Spring 2018 to November

Traffic impacts: 

Highway 51 will be reduced to one lane of traffic in each direction between Highway 47 and Trapp Road. Traffic on Highway 51 will be restricted to a 12-foot maximum width. Motorists should expect to encounter occasional flagging operations. Motorists are encouraged to consider using Highway 47 as an alternate route to avoid delays at peak tourist travel times.

Anticipated work schedule for next week: Crews will complete placement of new sidewalk and may begin placing new asphalt pavement.

Portage County

Business Highway 51

Location: Mac Arthur Way – Minnesota Avenue

Schedule: March 18 to spring 2020

Traffic impacts: An updated list impacts for the week of June 10 is available at the website below on the Traffic Impacts & Schedule tab.

Anticipated work schedule for next week: Crews will reopen the intersection of Locust and Highway HH/McDill and will close the intersection of Elm Street with Business Highway 51 to trim, grade and pour concrete at the Elm Street intersection. Crews will continue to pour concrete sidewalk, sidewalk ramps, driveway aprons and concrete terraces along northbound Business Highway 51 and eastbound Highway HH/McDill. Crews will complete concrete pavement for the Willow and Cedar Street intersections on the east side of Business Highway 51. Crews will begin to install the median curb and gutter along the northbound lanes of Business Highway 51.

Waupaca County

Highway 22 bridges

Location: Wautoma – Clintonville, at bridges over:

(1) South Branch of the Little Wolf River

(2) Crystal River and

(3) Wisconsin Central Ltd. (CN) RR tracks

Schedule: May 14th to Aug. 2

Traffic impacts: Northbound lane closures on all three bridges. Highway 22 will remain open to traffic in both directions. Traffic will be controlled with flaggers and temporary traffic signals.

Anticipated work schedule for next week: Crews will pour deck overlays on bridges (1) and (2). Crews will pour concrete for expansion joint repairs and barriers at edges of bridge (3). General concrete surface repairs will continue to occur.

Highway 156

Location: Highway 22 to Shawano County Line

Schedule: April 29 through September 2019

Traffic impacts: Highway 156 will remain open to a minimum of one lane of traffic at all times. Temporary traffic signals will be used on the bridge over the Wolf River.

Anticipated work schedule for next week: Traffic control, temporary traffic signals and temporary barrier wall will be installed on the Highway 156 bridge over the Wolf River. The contractor will began installing containment for the bridge girder repainting of the Wolf River Bridge.


Wood County

Highway 97 (Central Avenue)

Location: Between Arnold Street and Harrison Street, city of Marshfield

Schedule: May 1 to Aug, 29

Traffic impacts: Motorists can expect to encounter one-lane traffic in each direction on Highway 97 between Arnold street and Harrison street. Crews will be working on the inside travel lanes of Highway 97 between Arnold and Harrison streets. Pedestrian access to businesses and schools will be maintained during construction.

Anticipated work schedule for next week: Medians will be prepped for concrete, curb and gutter will be identified for the median islands, concrete will be poured for curb and gutter at the median areas and concrete bases for signals will begin to be installed.
