WAUSAU – The Newman Catholic girls basketball team overcame a seven-point halftime deficit to defeat Edgar 55-49 in its regular-season and Marawood Conference South Division finale Thursday at Newman Catholic High School.

Edgar led 29-22 at halftime before the Cardinals stormed back with a 33-point second half to earn the win and finish their regular season with an 8-16 record and 6-10 in the Marawood South.

Evie Bates scored 11 of her game-high 20 points in the second-half comeback for Newman Catholic. Ashley Jankowski added 14 points, nine in the second half.

Brandi Halvorsen led Edgar (10-13, 7-9 Marawood South) with eight points.

The two teams will meet again in a WIAA Division 5 regional quarterfinal at Edgar on Tuesday.
