A fatal shooting in January in Rothschild does not meet the state definition of an officer-involved death, according to the Wisconsin Department of Justice Division of Criminal Investigation.

The shooting happened on the evening of Jan. 3 after police from three area departments were called for a welfare check at a home in the 1000 block of Urban Street. Police made contact with the resident, who fled from officers, ran into a bathroom and fired a single round that resulted in his own death.

After reviewing the materials provided by DCI, the Marathon County District Attorney determined that this was not an officer-involved death as defined by state law. The Marathon County District Attorney’s Office will not take any further action in this matter and their file is closed.

Law enforcement from Rothschild, Kronenwetter, and Everest Metro Police Departments responded to the home. All involved officers were wearing body cameras during the incident.

DCI led the investigation with assistance from Marathon County Sheriff’s Office, a DCI Crime Response Specialist, and members of DCI’s Digital Evidence Unit.
