Wausau Pilot & Review

WAUSAU – Wausau West rallied from five runs down to defeat Newman Catholic in a wild 10-7 victory in a nonconference softball game Friday at West High School.

Newman Catholic forged ahead 7-2 after scoring two runs in both the fifth and sixth innings before the Warriors’ offense erupted, scoring eight times in the bottom of the sixth to take the lead.

Allison Kirsch and Addie Heil had RBI doubles, two runs scored on a Newman error, Taylor Liebelt had the go-ahead RBI single, and two more runs scored on another Cardinals’ miscue in the fateful sixth.

West is now 4-0 this season after sweeping three games in Florida in late March.

Heil finished 3-for-3 with two RBI, and Claire Calmes, Paityn Calmes and Liebelt all had two hits in the win for the Warriors.

Ava Sukanen had two hits and drove in three runs for Newman, which was playing its season-opener.

Newman Catholic will play its home opener against Athens at 4:45 p.m. Monday at Sunnyvale Park, before playing its Marawood Conference South Division opener at Stratford on Tuesday.

Wausau West will host D.C. Everest for its Wisconsin Valley Conference opener on Tuesday at 4 p.m.
